Ray of Hope 2025: Touching Lives, Inspiring Change
by Savita Prakash
On the evening of October 4, 2025, the India Community Center came alive with light, laughter, and purpose as the Community Seva family gathered for its twelfth annual Ray of Hope gala. Supporters, volunteers, and guests filled the hall – friends united by compassion and a shared dream of bringing dignity and hope to our unhoused neighbors.
The evening commenced with a warm social hour-guests mingled over delectable appetizers by Jalsa Catering, refreshing drinks, and soothing melodies of Timo’s live music. The silent auction tables drew curious crowds, while conversations flowed easily, bound by the shared spirit of giving. There was an unmistakable sense of belonging – the awe inspiring sensation of being part of something bigger than oneself.
As guests entered the beautifully decorated main hall at 6.30 pm, bathed in hues of yellow, orange and gold, emcees Chitra and Venkat welcomed everyone with their trademark warmth and humor, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening.
The program opened with a poignant video – a sombre reminder of the thousands who live without shelter, safety, or nourishment in our own backyard. Through statistics, stories, visuals, and interviews with Seva volunteers, it brought home both the scale of the crisis and the parallel, quiet, steadfast work of Community Seva volunteers.
Learning from the Inside Out
The keynote address was delivered by Ramesh Srinivasan, Senior Partner at McKinsey and author of The Journey of Leadership. In his thought provoking and moving talk on Human-Centric leadership, Ramesh explored what it means to lead with empathy – to ask not just what we do, but why we do it.
He spoke about ”Inside-Out Leadership” – leading from within through empathy, and from outside through fearless learning and openness to others’ perspectives. Drawing parallels between corporate and community leadership, he invited each of us to view service as an opportunity to learn, connect, and inspire.
Through stories and insights, Ramesh reminded us that true change begins when we shift from fear to love – when we choose understanding over judgement, curiosity over assumption. Ramesh’s words radiated hope and optimism, igniting a spark in every listener to give more of their time, resources, and compassion.
Story That Stirs the Soul
Our second guest speaker Claudine Sipili, Director of Lived Experience and Innovation at Destination: Home, brought the audience to their feet with her powerful story. A veteran who served the country for 7 years – a college graduate – Claudine had faced homelessness herself. It was through the tireless efforts of another organization and her own hard work and determination that she was able to get out of it and make a meaningful and joyful life thereafter. Claudine reminded us that every statistic hides a human story – one of resilience, courage, and hope.
“The measure of a community is how we care for those struggling the most,” she said. “We can be the reminder that no one in this community is invisible.”
Claudine’s words echoed deeply – homelessness is not inevitable. It is a community problem, and it requires a community based solution. Her message was simple yet profound: to see humanity beyond the circumstances of one’s life, to recognize that those who fall through the cracks need hands reaching out – not away.
The Heart of Seva
Founder Nathan Ganeshan took the stage next, welcoming one and all and reflecting on how a random act of kindness -sharing pizzas with the homeless people at St James park, San Jose – grew into a movement of compassion known today as Community Seva.
Since its founding in 2013, Community Seva has served over 400,000 meals, distributed 1000s of blankets, hygiene kits, and warm clothing, and provided vital services such as haircuts, laundry, and safe shelter. But as Nathan reminded everyone, the true measure of Seva isn’t in numbers – it’s in the lives touched and hope restored.
Through real-life stories, he painted a vivid picture of impact: Leo who lived in an RV in a VTA lot who used to look for “fresh” food in the dumpster no longer has to thanks to Community Seva; individuals on the street being given new socks and shoes to prevent hypothermia; David, a young man who, after losing his job, home, and confidence, found dignity through Seva’s support – and today works as a paralegal; Tom recovering safely indoors after a brutal regimen of chemotherapy instead of returning to the streets; survivors of domestic violence finding safety and healing.
“We see you. We hear you. We care for you,” Nathan said – the very heartbeat of Community Seva.
He then turned to the organization’s vision for the future – expanding kitchen operations to serve hot meals seven days a week, making the kitchen manager Linda’s role full time, strengthening the Safe Shelter Program, and supporting unhoused students in need. He announced a fundraising goal of $750,000, inviting each guest to be a Ray of Hope for someone’s tomorrow.
An Evening of Gratitude and Joy
Following the inspiring talks, guests enjoyed a sumptuous dinner by Jalsa, sharing reflections and connections that deepened the sense of community. The night concluded with heartfelt recognitions of those who went above and beyond in service, followed by live music by IyerWaltz and joyful dancing – a perfect finale to an evening that celebrated humanity at its best.
As the lights dimmed and guests departed, one message lingered on in all our hearts:
Hope is not some abstract idea – it’s a smile, a fresh, hot meal, a shared story, a listening ear, a small action…Together we are the rays illuminating even the darkest corners.
